Latishia Lee

Welcome to my About Me page! This space introduces who I am, where I come from, and how my experiences shape the way I learn. It provides context for the reflections shared throughout this blog as part of EDUC8213: The Future of Learning in the Digital Age, and reflects my ongoing curiosity about how education continues to evolve alongside technology.

My name is Latishia Lee. I am originally from Macao and currently live in Newcastle. I am studying for an MA in Education with the goal of becoming an international teacher, as I am particularly interested in working across different cultural and educational contexts. This blog reflects my learning journey as I explore how education continues to change in an increasingly digital world.

Outside of my academic life, I enjoy a balance of creative and active interests. I like painting, writing, and journaling, especially as ways to reflect, organise my thoughts, and process new ideas. I am also very active and enjoy going to the gym, doing pilates, and playing sports such as tennis, football, and volleyball, which help me stay motivated and provide a sense of routine and teamwork. In addition to playing football, I also enjoy watching the sport and am an Arsenal supporter, which has become part of my routine and social life.

I also have a female golden retriever and a male black bunny, both of which are a big part of my everyday life. Spending time with them reminds me of the importance of patience, care, and balance. These are values that also influence how I think about learning and wellbeing.

When it comes to learning in the digital age, I am particularly interested in how online and digital tools support reflection, connection, and self-directed learning. I often use digital spaces to organise ideas, document my learning, and explore educational content in flexible and personal ways. Rather than replacing traditional learning, these tools have become part of how I think, reflect, and engage with education on a daily basis.

My Hometown: Macao

Macao is my hometown, and it is a city shaped by a distinctive blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences. As a former Portuguese colony, the city reflects this cultural mix, particularly in its historic architecture and public spaces.

Some of Macao’s most well-known historical landmarks include the Ruins of St. Paul’s, Senado Square, and the Guia Fortress, which reflect the city’s colonial history and cultural heritage. Alongside these sites, Macao celebrates a wide range of cultural traditions, including Chinese festivals such as Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival, as well as local community events influenced by Portuguese culture. Food also plays an important role, with Macao’s cuisine reflecting its unique cultural blend.

Growing up in Macao shaped my educational values through a combination of traditional Chinese principles, such as respect for teachers and discipline, and Western educational approaches experienced through international schooling. This balance encouraged me to value both structure and creativity in learning.

Overall, growing up in a city shaped by both history and innovation taught me early on that learning can be found everywhere.

My Education Journey

I began my early education at The International School of Macao. This was a Canadian international school, and all of my teachers were Canadian. Growing up in this environment had a significant impact on my identity, as it exposed me to Western teaching styles, values, and perspectives from an early age. I remained at The International School of Macao through high school graduation, making it a formative and constant presence throughout my childhood and teenage years.

My favourite teacher was my fourth-grade teacher, who had a lasting influence on my learning and future aspirations. She taught English, one of my favourite subjects, and made every lesson engaging, creative, and enjoyable. Her relatable teaching style and genuine care created a classroom environment where I felt confident and motivated to participate. Alongside English, I also enjoyed Physical Education, as it allowed me to learn through movement and teamwork. Together, these experiences showed me that learning can take many forms. Her passion for teaching inspired me to want to become a teacher myself, and that inspiration has stayed with me throughout my educational journey.

For my undergraduate studies, I moved to the UK and studied Education (BA) at the University of Leeds.

This experience deepened my understanding of education as both a practical and theoretical discipline, and it allowed me to explore how learning, identity, and social contexts intersect.

I am currently studying Education (MA) at Newcastle University. At this stage of my academic journey, I am particularly interested in reflecting on my experiences as a learner and future educator and how they shape my approach to teaching.

When am I Most Alive?

I feel most alive when I am with my family or close friends, in moments that feel natural and unforced. Being surrounded by people who know me well allows me to be fully myself, without pressure or expectation. These moments ground me and remind me to appreciate life in its simplest and most meaningful form.

This sense of being alive also appears when I step outside my comfort zone and take risks. Choosing uncertainty over familiarity has often led to growth, even when it initially felt intimidating. Taking risks has taught me confidence, independence, and resilience, shaping the way I approach new experiences.

One of the biggest risks I took was leaving Macao and moving to Leeds for my undergraduate studies. Starting fresh in a new country, meeting new people, and adapting to a completely different environment were challenging, but they became among the most defining and rewarding decisions of my life. Moments like this remind me that I am most alive when I allow myself to grow through change.
